Mathematics with Mr. Hawkins

Math-  The first couple days of school have been spent with "getting to know you", distribution of books and discussions of school and classroom expectations from both a behavior and work perspective. We then moved to discussion and activities designed to instruct students how to use their textbook as an effective learning resource. An early homework assignment for seventh grade is an opening essay in which students tell us about their math experiences, both good and bad, and give us some idea about what they believe are some of their weakest areas in math. This information is used to help us focus on those areas with the student. Also gathered in the opening essay is information about each student's hometown, favorite color, number of siblings, etc. which is used as the data basis for a group activity where students apply the data to specified math concepts, coming up with math problems and presenting to and joining in a class discussion of these concepts. This activity was begun on September 6 and will conclude over the next couple of days, after which we will go into the first text section on patterns.
