 Course Overview:

Welcome to the 7th Grade! Get ready for a calm, cool, and cultured school year which is sure to bring about change.

The Cultural Studies Class is designed to provide you, the student, with an opportunity to understand how culture in other parts of the world has evolved. Three cultural areas of the world will be explored. These include: Latin America, East & South Asia, and Africa. Over the course of the year you will stretch your imagination to try to understand how people of these areas view the world and the events that have occurred and are occurring today. It is a primary goal of this class to expand your understanding of another’s point of view. It is important that as members of a global society that we are careful not to project our values on people of other cultures for fear that we might allow our differences to become a barrier to open interaction.

Cultural conflicts and issues of human rights will be investigated throughout the year in each of the cultural units.  A strong reliance on history will provide you with the context for these investigations. Every attempt will be made to provide you with varied points of view so that you may draw your conclusions through a critical analysis of varying opinions. You will work to sharpen your abilities to think critically and make educated choices. You will learn to resolve conflicts and to create peaceful solutions to difficult situations. You will expand your view of the world and develop a better understanding of where you fit in it.

Additional notes and helpful hints.

Any missing Test of Quizzes due to students absenses must be made up within one week otherwise the Test/Quiz grade will be recorded as a Zero.  (When students take too much time to make up a missed test/quiz they tend to forget the information.)  Please arrange to make up tests/quizzes and if you need longer than a week please come and talk to me.  Reasonable exceptions can be made.
